December 25, 2002

Greetings and MERRY Xmas to all our friends and donors!!!

It has been four years (1999), since the establishment of the Liberia
Institute of Journalism(LIJ), a non-profit institute to train and empowered
Liberian journalists that through them the greater society can gain
democratic consciousness.

This has been the goal of the Institute since I won the CNN African
Journalist Award for radio in 1999.
The question is have we been able to work towards this goal in the face of
the harsh reality confronting Liberian journalists?

well, the Institute with its 15 able staff of seasons journalists and
professionals with grants from the National Endowment for Democracy(NED) and
the Open Society Imitative for West Africa(OSIWA), this year has been to
train over 500 practicing journalists in urban and rural Liberia, free of
charge.

In northeastern, central and southern Liberia there are over 50 community
rural stations build by Liberians who are electronically inclined. These
stations cover an average of 5 miles radius. We have adopted 10 of these
stations trained their staff in broadcasting and in return they broadcast
our civic, health and rights messages. For many of these communities these
stations are their only means of communication. the LIJ support to them has
been a great help.

We were also able to host a peace conference bringing together delegates
from Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia to create a dialogue between
journalists and governments and civil society.

The Institute has graduate its second group of young journalists. We were
able to setup a production studio for hands on training. Something that is
lacking at all journalism school in Liberia. We also established a
journalists computer literacy program, to make Liberian journalists computer
literate
We were able to publish three editions of the Liberian Media journal,
Continue the West Africa Newsletter(WAN) online, http://www.lij.kabissa.org
and establish the "TRUTH" online. The Institute's newsletter.
These are some of our many achievements in 2002.

The year 2003, is slated for presidential and general elections. A trying
time for us journalists who remain to keep the gate. In order for
journalists to be credible and play their part in the upcoming elections
they must be empowered that through them the greater society can gain
democratic consciuosness.
Therefore, LIJ has planned a series of workshops on "Elections Reporting"
for rural and urban Liberia beginning the last week in January 2003. We have
not been able to secure a grant for this project. We are therefore asking
all our friends, well wishers and those who believe in journalists
empowerment to make a donation to this project or collaborate with us. We
would appreciate any help you can render.

To make a donation just give the below listed information to your bank.

LIJ's Bank account number:0221223355401
LIJ's Bank name: Liberia Bank for Development and Investment(LBDI),
Randall&Ashmun Sts., Monrovia, Liberia
New York Correspondent Bank: Citibank,NA.
Please, if journalists are to play a part they need to be trained and
empowered, therefore anyway or amount you can help with will be appreciated.

Many thanks for your help,

Vinnie Hodges,
Executive Director
