OAS AGENCY AWARDS OVER $US 1.5 MILLION TO SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

Washington DC: Announcing grants for more than US$ 1.6 million for science and technology projects, the Inter-American Agency for Cooperation and Development (IACD) said the funds will benefit projects that focus on new technology applications to improve the environment, facilitate disaster relief, assist small businesses and expand communication in the Caribbean, Mexico and Central and South America.

The Organization of American States (OAS) technical cooperation agency announced as well that it had awarded more than US$ 1.5 million in grants to fund a variety of education projects throughout the Caribbean and Latin America. The projects range from young entrepreneur programs for university students in the Southern Cone to occupational education for the handicapped in the Caribbean and teacher training in primary education in Central America.

In a separate announcement, the IACD said it was awarding additional grants totaling nearly $1 million to help OAS member states fund nine national and regional projects in sustainable development and the environment. These programs include wetland conservation, offshore island conservation, land use for degraded pastures in the Amazon and improvement in the management of protected areas.

Commenting on the technology grants, L. Ronald Scheman, Director General of the Agency, said, "New technology is having a tremendous impact on science and technology and conveys in the advancement of many priority fields for the OAS Member States. The OAS and the Agency strongly support efforts to modernize and improve the quality of life, especially for the more vulnerable communities within the Western Hemisphere."

These funds are part of a package of grants totaling some US$6.1 million that was recently announced by the IACD, the development cooperation arm of the OAS established in 1999 to promote technical cooperation and training programs necessary to accelerate economic development in the countries of the hemisphere.
