(2) ABOUT MOPTI
A good presentation of Mopti, its people, scenery (landscape) and the River
Niger by François Launay. His introduction (I translated for you below) is
the simplest and most informative.
Mopti is the capital city of the 5th Administrative Region of Mali and the
second most populated city in Mali. It is called "Venise of Mali" after
Venice of Italy because it is surrounded by water and rice fields. Like in
Venice in Italy movements between quarters are done by boats. Mopti is the
gateway to Timbuktu by the locally built engine-powered boats called
Pinasse. This site is by far the best you can find about Mopti!

Hi everybody,
My name is Kathy Songer and I'm from Michigan. I do have some friends (pen
pales) living in Mali, Africa. Recently, they sent me lots of cards from the
dogon? country and Mopti? Mopty? I loved so much thoses cards and would like
to know more about the stated places. Can anyone help and provide
informations about the "history, or legend" of the dogons and why Mopty,
according to my friends, is called "venise? malienne?
I would like to go to Mali during the christmass holidays, that's why I'm
looking for those informations. I might also do a presentation on Mali.
I'm mainly going to Mali because of Toumbouctou. My friends said it's in
Mali, they even sent me a map. Can you please tell me more about this
legendary city, the culture??
I would really appreciate if you could also list any web site,
news-papers....in which I can get informations about those three well known
African cities.
