Mali’s homegrown musical scene may be thriving and producing international
stars
such as Salif Keita and Toumani Diabate but for Malians in London and those
interested in the culture, art and music of this West African country, there
are
few means of linking up with fellow Malian nationals and likeminded people.
Which is exactly why a number of Mali-loving Londoners and British-based
Malians
established the Friends of Mali association (www.friendsofmali-uk.org).
Friends of Mali seeks to increase knowledge of Malian culture, promote good
relations between Mali and Britain, create opportunities to learn about
Malian
arts, crafts and music and facilitate trade and development activities.
On Saturday July 12th at Ocean, to launch the association, expect a night of
all
things Malian including a powerful performance by Assa Drame, daughter of
Mali’s
celebrated praise singer Tata Bambo Kouyate. Having established herself on
France’s African circuit Drame looks set to successfully spread her wings
across
the channel, with this her UK debut. She will be joined on stage by her
musicians on kora, n’goni and guitar.
Supporting either side will be acclaimed BBC Radio DJ Andy Kershaw and
Mali’s
own Willy Foteh guaranteeing foot-shifting pan-African music throughout the
night.
Plus there will be opportunities to peruse Oumar Cisse’s authentic Malian
store
of West African jewellery, fashion and art, and the chance to win a holiday
to
Mali courtesy of Explore Worldwide in our Grand raffle, together with other
exciting prizes.
