BAMAKO, Mali - A coalition backing newly elected President Amadou Toumani Toure trailed the former
ruling party in the first round of parliamentary elections in this impoverished West African
country, the government announced. Toure's Coalition for Change and Democracy took just two of the
National Assembly's 147 seats in Sunday's vote, compared to 10 seats for former President Alpha
Oumar Konare's Alliance for Democracy, the interior ministry said Wednesday night.

Former Prime Minister Ibrahim Boubacar Keita's Hope 2002 also took 10 seats.

A second round of voting takes place July 28 to decide 125 seats in constituencies where no party
received more than 50 percent of the vote. The results must be confirmed by the constitutional
court. Turnout was low in the first round, which was overshadowed by allegations of fraud. Both
Keita and Konare's parties have said they will contest the results in some constituencies.
